What does a @ A record do?

I am learning DNS and am having a hard time learning what an A record with a "@" symbol does. I basically understand what A records do, I just am having a tough time finding an explanation for the A record using "@". I guess that it is such a ubiquitous character that google gets lost.

Any help would be appreciated.

It means the domain itself. Search google for zone files examples and you'll see that.
