VPN service provider for setting up my own network with Linux + Windows PCs

Hello All,

I am living in Ireland but I am Hungarian and my parents live in Hungary. I only visit them twice a year, otherwise we use skype and gtalk to chat. I am the one who administers their computer remotely, I have Kubuntu, they have Xubuntu and XP.

So far I was using Hamachi to build a "family VPN" and this was the way I could run the console over ssh with their Hamachi IP address and then I could fix what they needed via the console. But I am starting to have more and more problems with Hamachi (e.g. it does not seem to work in Ubuntu 10.4) so I started to search for a different VPN provider, no success.

I have found 2 kinds of pages:

1. How to set up the VPN service on Linux
2. How to hide my IP address while surfing

I have also started to read about Ubuntu's cloud thing if that would give me what I need but got lost in all the info.

If anyone knows of any service that could give me what I need please let me know.

Thank you!

No need for a 'provider'. You can be your own provider/server. Have a look at OpenVPN. One way to do it would be to have your Kubuntu machine acting as the server, and the ones in Hungary (Xubuntu and XP) as clients. Simple port forwarding through your router along with a dynamic dns domain name will do what you want.

Many home routers will support auto updating dyndns when your home ip changes, and if not there's plenty of clients available for your ubuntu machine.
