VPN Server

Hello,
I'm looking to set up a VPN server in Fedora Core 3. I have no idea where to start on it. I am guessing a great place is to have a VPN server package installed. I have got IPSEC installed off the DVD from the RPM packages, however when i access this tab under network configuration it appears it is the way you connect to a server - so its client software.
Could anyone tell me the following please:

1. What package I need to install to use as a VPN Server.
2. Where I can find information about setting up my linux system as a VPN Server

My VPN Server is based on a Fedora Core 3 Distro on a network which is behind a router - i have already mapped port 1723 to the machine, but i may have to map 50 and 51 from what i have read??? anyway, the client machine will be using windows 2000... i know how to set that part up, didnt know if it was relevant that I included that information or not, but i id anyway.

Thanks for any help in advance.

1. I use Poptop.org pptpd for a VPN server since PPTP is a microsoft standard it's client software is installed by default on most MS OS's.

2. www.poptop.org

I don't believe you need to map port 50. On my setup I have 1723 mapped to the server and that is all. Ofcourse my router is set up for pptp pass through so that this type of VPN will work.

Any idea how I could get this client machine from miles away to actually be a member of the main domain?? We have a domain called mydomain and we join each windows machine to it in the usual way (network identification) but is there a way that we can do this with linux for a PC that is outside our network... or by using VPN to become a member of the domain (i.e. it will use our email servers, execute login.bat files etc...) we want to do this WITHOUT having a leased line... just by using our existing network connection and preferably without having another Linux box at the remote site (since there is only one pc there but they need access to our network like we do - small company)

Thanks

Steve

PS Thank you for that info on VPN by the way.

Your welcome,
As for joining the domain. I believe the answer is yes. I use VPN to connect to my machine at home, there I have Windows file sharing /Samba running. File sharing is not accessible from the internet on my network, however once you enter on the VPN, the remote PC has an ip address inside the LAN therefore you can browse file shares.

Once you connect a client with VPN you will appear to be on the same network as the VPN server.

Hope this helps. Domain controllers and such are not my strong point.

i am not getting very far with this VPN set up. well actually im not getting anywhere at all.

i downloaded the ipsec rpm but it dont make sense how to configure it and i downloaded the pptpd rpm but that dont work the way i wanted... from my client machine it doesnt authorise the username and password. just keeps saying its invalid but i know its right coz i set the username and password up my self.
what i'm after tho by the way is this distant pc actually being able to access all the same stuff as we can on our lan like the email server (can it be configured to do that) i want to be able to allow a login batch file that mounts a file share in thier "my computer" when they connect. how do i do this to get what i want to achieve?
i really need basic instructions (as in as simple as you can get) coz im a newbie to linux, however i posted this here coz i am aware that its a networking issue.

Many Thanks

Steve
