virtual x server?
I'm looking for something like "screen" but for X.
For those who don't already know what I'm talking about, here's the scoop:
I have a file/print server that I often find myself using as a second desktop system. It is a headless setup (no keyboard, monitor, or mouse). Here's how I usually treat it:
xinit -- :1
ssh -X me@myserver
startkde
This works suprisingly well. It is a miracle of modern technology that I have two computers running kde on one station (without a kvm switch) so easily. Here's my dilemma. I would like to be able to reboot my workstation computer (and perhaps load that evil xp from time to time) without closing down the gui programs running on the server. When my computer is off, They cannot connect to the X server, and they exit. I need (well, desire) a pass-through X server like xnest, but that can disconnect from it's parent server, and reattach later. This is kinda like the screen command for the command line (I you haven't played with it, you're missing out).
Has anyone done this, or heard of such a thing? I don't think xnest will do it, but maybe I just didn't see the option.
