Using Squid for proxy

Hi there,

I have a network of Windows machines (all 2000 or XP) which share one internet connection. The server machine is dual booting XP and SuSE 8.2 at the moment - usually in XP with internet connection sharing (ICS) running.

However, I want to restrict the maximum bandwidth certain machines use. I have heard this can be done using Squid. Is it possible to restrict use Squid to do this without having to make each program used on the (Windows) client machines connect through a proxy - i.e. runs as though it is directly connected to the internet just like Windows ICS does?

I know Squid can apply an ACL to a specific MAC address, which is what I would do. The problem is, as the network is used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, I have to do server maintenace as quickly as possible, therefore I need to know if it's possible before I mess around!

Thanks for your help,
Mark.
