Angry Upgraded to Stretch now networking doesn't start after reboot

Hello,

I have a Debian server that was I upgraded from Wheezy>Jessie>Stretch and now I have to manually restart the networking after its monthly reboot. It works fine until the next reboot and I haven't not been able to isolate the reason why this is happening. My interfaces file is below, is there something missing keeping it from starting on boot?

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto ens32
iface ens32 inet static
address 10.1.1.12
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 10.1.1.0
broadcast 10.1.1.255
gateway 10.1.1.1

The interfaces file contains a network option, which I haven't seen before. Is this legal?
Besides, its format isn't easily readable.

What are the precise symptoms when you need to restart networking?
What is the output of ip a at this moment?
How do you restart networking?
Do you see anything in /var/log/syslog that might be related?
Is NetworkManager enabled?

One of the huge differences between Wheezy and later versions is the move to systemd. I wonder if your problem is related to that.

After some investigation in regards to your questions

When I upgraded to Stretch, I noticed the network interface name didn't change from "eth0" to "ensxx" and I was not able to get the server back online. I manually added the interface config you see in my original post. It sounds like I didn't do that correctly per your response. Also, I just checked the status of the "NetworkManager" to find that it doesn't seem to be fully deployed and may have been the root cause.

If I go to locate the config file for NM its not there, instead I see the below listed:

server01:/etc/NetworkManager# ls
dispatcher.d

If I go to restart or check status of the NetworkManager, again, its not there:

# systemctl status NetworkManager
Unit NetworkManager.service could not be found.

So looks like first thing is to figure out how to deploy NetworkManager correctly??

Thanks for you reply BTW!

I would ensure that it is not installed. It's useful for interfaces that change IP addresses often, such as wireless interfaces in a laptop, but you have wired interfaces with fixed addresses.

There are still three questions without answers

What is the output of ip a at this moment?
How do you restart networking?
Do you see anything in /var/log/syslog that might be related?
