upgrade my Ethernet from 10/100 to 1G in Linux

I want to upgrade my Ethernet from 10/100 to 1G in Linux. What is the step?

Go to the HCL (hardware compatibility list) of your distribution and that of Linuxquestions and see what's best supported. Buy it and install it. If your distro doesn't automatically find it and you are new to Linux, get another distro or try to install the module for it.

If it doesn't work, check if a CD came with the card that might have Linux drivers on it, if not, check the manufacturers website.
