unable to telnet & ftp


hi everybody,

i am using mandriva and have been using it for the last 4-5 months.. but i am having a typical problem..

i am not able to connect to my PC from other machines, either using ssh, telnet or ftp..

and when i looked in the /etc/xinet.d directory, i do not find the files, telnet/ssh..

also i do not have /usr/sbin/in.telnetd, /usr/sbin/in.ftpd

what do i do ?


any help would be helpful..

Ssh is built with the libwrap library, so it doesn't need to be controlled with xinetd. First check if openssh is installed. Check if sshd is configured to start in runlevels 3 & 5. Another possibility is that the firewall is blocking ssh. Also read through the man page for sshd_config.

On SuSE at least, the ftp server is started on certain runlevels with the /etc/rc.d/vsftpd script which starts the binary file /usr/sbin/vsftpd.
Try "locate ftpd" and see what the result is on your system.

Also try "rpm -qa | grep ftp" to locate which package supplied the in.ftpd or vsftpd program.

I think you might be expecting Fedora Core to be exactly like a particular Unix implementation.
