ubuntu karmic nis client 'ypcat shadow.byname' works, but 'getent shadow' fails

I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) and can't seem to get it to allow
logins using passwords from the nis shadow map.

Good: ypcat shadow.byname | grep nisusername
shows the shadow entry for nisusername

NotGood: getent shadow
shows only what is in the file /etc/shadow

I'm using nsswitch.conf entry
shadow: files nis
I have a '+' at the end of the /etc/shadow file

'ypcat passwd' works as expected; so does 'getent passwd'

The nis server is Debian 4.0 (etch).

What am i missing? What should I check?

Finally had to give up and use libnss-extrausers and rsync the shadow file from the ypmaster every hour.
