Ubuntu ifconfig

Ubuntu 7.04 recognizes on board network card and allows assignment of properties.(DHCP/Static IP subnet/gateway and nameservers).

Ifconfig does not show the card, only the loopback.

Attempts to ping the router gives " network not available"

Attempted fixes:

1 .ifconfig -a shows the card as eth2. sudo ifconfig eth2 up : network not available.

2. Use this connections network switch and cable on another box: internet connection works. (problem not the network...must the ubuntu box.

3. Disable on board LAN and use PCI card.......network not available.

Occasionally I get a device busy error regarding the NIC.

Is problem bios?

Other ideas? Thanks.
