tun tap doubt

hi
i have just one doubt-
/dev/net/tun exists on my system

but how should 1 configure tun0,tun1,.......;i mean how should 1 assign the ip addresses to tun0,tun1,..
ifconfig tun0 ipadr1 ..... gives an error that device not found
how exactly to use "ifconfig" for configuring /dev/tun0,/dev/tun1.....

i really don't understand the difference between /dev/net/tun and /dev/tun0 , /dev/tun1,/dev/tun2 ......

how do you actually configure the ipaddresses for tun0,tun1 ................
I really am confused regarding this

please do help me out on this

thanks
karan
