Trying to install Intel NIC, driver loads but ifconfig doesn't recognize

Let me just start out with saying this is the first time I've ever actually compiled something, so its entirely possible I did something wrong.

Anyway I have a debian box here running "Linux 2.6.18-6-amd64" and an Intel EXPI9300PT which uses the 82572GI chipset.

I got the e1000e driver off of Intel's site and after much frustration got it compiled and loaded.

After using modprobe e1000e, it says Intel Corporation etc etc. However, I don't know where to go from here. Last night the card was somehow getting assigned eth3, but I couldn't get assign an IP to it. Today its not even being assigned an ethx.

Edit: Just a little update after I did rmmod e1000 and modprobe e1000e it came up as eth3. Ipconfig still would not recognize it however until I did dhclient. Which I'm not entirely sure why its working now, but after the dhclient it came up as eth5? and started working.

So I guess now I'm looking at how to make this permanent and load the NIC every time I reboot.

Not sure about Debian, but can't you just put the modprobe and ifconfig commandlines in /etc/rc.local, so that each time the system boots the commands will be executed to get the NIC working?
