Hi,

I'm totally new to linux, and i've recently installed openSUSE 10.3. One of the first things I'm trying to do is connect to the internet; unfortunately it is proving to be a frustrating experience. My ISP is BSNL, I'm using a SmartAX MT841 (HUAWEI) modem (USB port connection). I'm afraid it's not possible for me to buy a LAN card (whatever that is). I've configured ethernet eth0 with IP 192.168.1.200 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0. I've installed the RP-PPPOE software and set it up with my username and password and eth0. However, whenever I type 'pppoe-start' it gives '.........TIMED OUT'. Also, going to http://192.168.1.1/ in firefox doesn't work (it's supposed to give the modem configuration page, that's what it does under Vista). I'd be very grateful if one of you guys could help me out. If I can't configure the net, I'll have to give up on Linux altogether!

I have never tried to connect a modem to Linux box with a USB cable. What kind of computer did you install SUSE on? Eth0 is connected to a network interface card. If eth0 is coming up means that SUSE sees it there. You should connect the computer to your modem using an Ethernet cable not the USB. if you are able to get one i would disconnect the USB and connect the Ethernet cable. Unplug the power of your modem and plug it back in. Bootup your box and you should be OK.

I also think you should get yourself a router. You would not need to use pppoe because it would be taken care of with the router (Linksys, D-Link or Netgear).

Thanks, DrEonn. Problem is, while my modem has a jack for connecting an Ethernet cable, my computer doesn't have one! It's a 2002 P4 with an Intel D845GLAD motherboard. So is buying a 'LAN card' the only option?

I can't say it is your only option. I do think it would be your esiest one. i know you could get an ethernet card for as little as $9:00 on the internet and about 15 in a best buy or circuit city.
