Can you give the telnet command that you're trying to connect with?

Be aware that inbound telnet is probably blocked by your firewall; this is as it should be, it's terribly insecure.

Also, telnetd will have to be running; you can check this out using

ps aux | grep telnet

on the machine that you're trying to telnet to.

In most cases, ssh is a better choice than telnet; it's fully encrypted, whereas telnet is clear text.

The command for connecting to linux server is "telnet 192.168.1.13" .

I have checked that telnet service is running by issuing your command.

Firewall is disabled in my linux box.

Though it is unsecure still I want to use it.

Pls help.

Hm... the error message indicates some sort of name resolution problem, but you're trying to connect by IP address, which shouldn't require a name lookup.

My guess is that this is a problem on the connecting machine, not with the machine that you're trying to connect to. What type of machine are you using to connect?

How is the network set up? Are you using static IP addresses or DHCP?

You may want to try downloading a live distro (eg. Ubuntu, Knoppix, Damn Small Linux), boot off of your CD (with a live distro, you don't have to worry about what's written on the hard drive... a simple reboot will get you back to Windows), telnet in to your standard Linux box from the box running the live distro, and see if you're still having problems. If you're denied, at least telnetting from a Linux box may give you a more meaningful error message.

Also, take a look in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny on the server you're trying to telnet to.

Just for diagnostic purposes... what happens when you try to ssh into the Linux box? (Download PuTTY, the world's best telnet/ssh client in order to ssh from Windows).

Linux Box has got the Static IP address i.e. 192.168.1.13.

Tried with PuTTY and it is working fine.

Nothing special in hosts.allow or deny.As usual file.

Expecting a sharp solution.

Ok... after having done some googling, I found a possible solution, low and behold, right here on LinuxQuestions.org:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=524049

What happens with putty when you try Telnet/Port 23?
