Post Telnet problem???

Guys,
I have set up two systems on a network ,one of them operating on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 and the other on Fedora Core 4.Everything is working fine until "ping".But when I tried to "Telnet" or "FTP" to the other machine I get a message--Connection Refused.I am sure that I have stopped my IPTABLES and SELinux is disabled. What would be the problem?
I can ofcourse ssh and sftp.
I am trying to Telnet as Root.If Root is not authorised to do so,how can we enable Root to Telnet and FTP? One of the friend replied me "whether I set up a Telnet server".Do I need to establish a Telnet server? If so,how can I?

Hi,

Are you trying to telnet/ftp as root or as a normal user?

By default most distro's turn off (with good reason) direct root access to/from telnet and ftp. This options also excists for ssh, but is enabled by default.

On my system there is a telnet server, in.telnetd (8). (in /usr/sbin)

A quick search on google showed how to tell if your telnet server is running
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=358063

and how to enable it if it isn't
http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/conflin.shtml

For the second link, you might need to edit /etc/inetd.conf instead of /etc/xinetd/telnetd

Try and see if it works.

Why do you want telnet again? especialy when you have ssh working.
