Telnet help

Ok i am trying to peform a telnet test but i can't figure out how to send the command.

basically i type
--------------------------------------------
[clue@sin2:/opt/outbound]$ telnet localhost 13555
Trying 172.15.22.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
This is a test

----------------------------------

Everytime i hit enter it just proceeds to the next line. How do i acutally send and even communicate with the external server for that matter???

Also what is the escape character for and how is it used?

You have successfully made a connection with 172.15.22.1 on port 13555. You're already communicating with it. Now it's up to whatever process is listening on port 13555 to respond to your input. So what exactly are you connecting to?

The escape character is ^] which means CTRL+], which you would press if you want to forcibly break out of your telnet session.

Ok thanks for you reply. So how do i actually send the commands to the machine? I am having trouble figuring this out. When i type the below command "This is a test" how do i now send it to the machine that i am connected to?

[clue@sin2:/opt/outbound]$ telnet localhost 13555
Trying 172.15.22.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
This is a test

Typing it and pressing enter sends the command.

The remote machine just isn't replying to you.

I can't tell you that. You have not answered a question I posed earlier. What exactly are you connecting to? What are you expecting to get? What is listening on port 13555 on 172.15.22.1?
