telnet configuration


how to start telnet configuration &what are the basic command for this..
i tried the command like chkconfig telnet on but after giving ip address it is giving the erroe like could not start telnet..
but it is pinging to the other system also..i also ckecked firewall setting..

A lot of distributions by default include a telnet client but don't install the telnet daemon. OpenSSH was released since telnet and rlogin are insecure - you probably do have an OpenSSH daemon installed.

Can you tell us what distribution you're using? I assume it's redhat based since you use chkconfig?

The command "man telnet" will help you. It describes just about everything you can do with telnet on a linux system. Simply,

jim@jimsworktop:~/test$ telnet (name or IP) (optional port number)

So telnet gmail.com 25 will telnet you to gmail at port 25, and
telnet 192.168.1.1 will telnet to 192.168.1.1 at the default port, 23.
