Swapping eth0 with eth1

Hi,

I have a server with two NIC cards, on a Supermicro motherboard. On Linux, the cards are reversed: eth0 shows as eth1 and eth1 shows as eth0. Both cards use the same module, since it's basically two identical cards.

One is not not wired at all (no link), and the other is connected to a ethernet 100mbps port.
From a purist standpoint, I'd really love eth1 to be eth0, since eth0 is useless.

How can I do this?
I'm on Debian.
I tried to swap MAC addresses in /etc/network/interfaces, and assign network parameters to eth0, but when I do so, I'm not connected to internet anymore... so I guess it's not the right way to do this.

Thanks!
BlueSpirit
