suse 9.1 dhcp getting loop back ip by default

Hi, just finished the install of SUSE 9.1 on my old 466 Mhz celeron laptop, only took a mere 6hrs! The problem is that I have my network configured for DHCP and but when the network starts I just get the loopback IP. I'm using a pc card 10/100 adapter, which it looks like SUSE finds OK, gets the name & model right. I don't think its a problem with the network itself because the lights on the card come on, & other computers work fine. this one did as well when I had ubuntu installed...
can anyone give me some idea of how I can fix this? I'd hate to have to reload another distro and loose another 3-6hrs!

Please provide any system log error output, output from ifconfig, route, stuff like that?

I can't give you the actual output because that machine isn't online..

ifconfig returns something to the effect:

lo link encap: local loopback....
inet adr: 127.0.0.1 ...
...
...

no error output as far as I can see just can't ping anyone.

I'm begining to wonder if it isn't a pcmcia error, cause
/etc/init.d/pcmcia status
reports "unused"

doh!
