I have look at many websites and looked at some books to set up my then work at home. I am running 3 machines all on a wireless net work. 2 machines are XP and 1 is a split XP/SUSE 9.0. The Linux box can see the XP machine but, can only access one of them. The other machine (DESKTOP) when the folder for it is click I get the following error message "The file or directory smb://DESKTOP/ does not exist." Now I belive the DESKTOP is setup correctly on its end because I can see it from my other XP stations.
I also cannot print on the network. The XP station DESKTOP is were my HP PSC 750 is conncted.
Does this sound like a problem with the DESKTOP machine or is it some thing I screwed up.
I have had no problems with anyother setups. SUSE 9.0 is nice to use and very friendly for some one new to it.
I have checked and the Workgroup is correct. When using LinNeighborhood I can see my Desktop but cannot access it. I am going to remove Samba and reinstall and make sure eveything is installed correctlly.
The built in firewall on the XP machine is off. I don't quite understand the password and username thing yet. I can get on my other networked XP machine with out any problem but the Desktop askes for username and password, but there is not one. I am still playing with the setting in the samba config file and I hope to get it right soon.
If I'm understanding you correctly, using LinNeighborhood you can log on to shares on one XP machine but not another. If that is correct then the problem probably lies within that second XP machine. The username and password in LinNeighborhood that I'm talking about is located in LinNeighborhood - Edit - Preferences - Miscellaneous. You can set the default username and password to scan the XP machines with. On the XP machine that you can't access, do you have simple file sharing enabled or disabled. Open Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View and at the bottom there is a radio button to enable simple file sharing. If you remove this you will be able to set permissions on the shares you setup.
The username and password that the Desktop is asking for is for a valid user who has been granted permission to Read/Write/Execute in the folder options above. The folder permissions only apply if your XP machine is Pro, XP Home doesn't have that security.
