I installed Slackware 12.0 (32 bit OS) on my AMD 64 bit computer. I am in a univ where they provide MATLAB on a server. I connect to the server through ssh:
ssh -X <server i.p>
I can login successfully. When I run MATLAB, it simply hangs. My computer shows 99% CPU usage by ssh X. Even when I run some other application like gedit, it is incredibly slow.
I have all libs of Xserver installed (Xvideo, YV12 overlay). I also have a /proc/mtrr file. I use a MSI motherboard with VIA graphics card and have the corresponding driver loaded. I can provide any other info on my computer if needed.
I'd try how it works without forwarding X. Simple ssh, then text commands only. Should work nicely. If that's fine, run ssh -X and check one application after another. Then check the traffic when you run those you have problems with. Is it high? The thing is that when you run an X-based app via ssh it requires an enormous amount of transfers sometimes.
Thanks for the reply. Yes, ssh without X works fine. In my CentOS system, ssh -X works just fine with MATLAB etc. Its slackware thats giving me problems. I am now at my work computer so I'll check the network activity on my home computer when I get home.
I checked the network traffic. Its as low as 130 bytes per second. Even my internet speed is around 50-100 kilobytes per second. Looks like ssh is not getting enough speed to load the apps in -X mode.
What should I try out?
