ssh


hi,

can a person download files through ssh?

let's say i'm on a window box and i connect to a linux box through ssh using putty, could i download files to the windows box through that protoco.?

Yes you can do it using scp. Not quite the same as an ssh shell session. Take a look at winscp.

if scp can run under ssh shell session then i don't need winscp do i? don't know

you can't run it under a shell session, he means that scp uses the same protocols and principles as ssh, but acts in a different way.

and you can download files with ssh. You use the scp command at the ssh command line. On my system I get a shell prompt from BASH and I can run scp to copy files.

I haven't figured out how to copy the files to my windows machine as I don't understand naming conventions for the syntax of scp, so I am also using winscp at the same time as ssh. I can execute commands using ssh and transfer files nicely using winscp.
