Smoothwall 1.0 won't dial out???

I'm a n00b here so please be gentle.

Just installed smoothwall 1.0 got into it from the web interface from other puter on my LAN.
Tried to set up the modem.
Hit connect, it says dialing for about 3 to 5 sec and then says idle.
It never starts to dial at all.

I don't even know what COM port my modem is on. I tried looking in the bios and I only see COM 1 and 2 so I enabled both. Tried both in the setup and same thing.

My specs are pentium 200mmx 32MB ram 4 gig HDD USR/3com modem (Its a OEM 2976) It is a hardware modem.

Was setup 'spose to detect my modem at some point? It didn't. It set up my NIC as green and modem as red so it must have seen it right?

I have tried to read all the official pdf files and they say very little about getting PPP to work. Just tell you to fill in your info and I have done that.

This same machine was running win98se with ICS earlier today. I hope I don't have to go back to that.

peace

Wow that is kinda overwhelming to me, but I have read some of this and after reading

"Internal Modems (ISA, PCI and AMR)
The first thing to do is to make sure that the modem will work under Linux since (as of 2002) many modems don't. See modem list. If the modem is both PnP and directly supported by the serial driver (kernel 2.4 +) then there is no configuring for you to do since the Linux serial driver will configure it."

modem list is a link to http://www.idir.net~gromitkc/winmodem.html
which tells me that my modem should be configured automatically under kernel 2.4

"How about PCI modems? Are all PCI modems winmodems?
No, there are at least three types of controller-based PCI modems. They are somewhat more difficult to set up than a jumpered ISA modem or an external serial port modem. Linux 2.4 will probably include automagic setup of PCI hardware modems.
If you are curious, these modems are:

USR/TI Kermit chipset:
the 3Com/USR 3CP5610 family, which includes models 5613, 5609, and OEM models 2976, 2977, and 3258"

I checked and I have the 2976.

So since smoothwall 1.0 does not have the 2.4 kernel and I have only just begun I decided to get smoothwall 2.0 beta 4 and try with that.

I don't have time to mess with this yet this week, but if I can't get that to work I'll be back here.

peace
