Slllllloooowwww upload

Here's the scenario: The wonderful system files on my Windows box corrupted and now I'm staring at a nice Redmond-style re-install. To salvage my files, I've got my Windows PC booting up off of a Knoppix 3.1 CD. I just installed vsftpd 1.0 on my RedHat 7.3 PC. The trick being that I can simply FTP my files from one PC to the other, re-install Windows, and FTP them back. Gotta love Linux.

Slight problem. According to Konqueror, my upload speed is currently 40 kb/s, which is really odd considering this is all on an internal network. Given that I have 2 GB of files to move over, this is going to take a LOT of time -both- ways.

I know this isn't a card driver or level 0 issue as I've gotten better up to 300 kb/s downloads off of the Internet on both PCs. The Windows PC's Ethernet is an APM built-in to the motherboard. The RedHat's Ethernet is a 3c59x PCI card. My router is a SpeedStream 2614 which hasn't given me any problems before. Is there something I'm missing here or a governor somewhere I can take off?

i have a box connected to the internet right now: gigahurts.net

it downloads at speeds up to 20kb/s and uploads at 1MB/sec (on campus) or so.

in situations like these, i suspect a hardware problem somewhere. try using a different cable. if that doesnt work, try a different network card. since you dont have anything to really test it with (we have Fluke nettools) you'll have to just swap stuff out until it works.

to test software issues, try uploading to a different computer, try downloading from a computer, try as many different scenarios as possible to see what is slow and what isnt.

kill all unecessary processes and firewalls also (on all machines in the mix) and see if that makes a difference.

if i find out why my machine refuses to download at 1MB/sec, i'll post here and let you know, but since i havent tested yet..i have no clue but i think there is a problem with my recieve pair. (i've been lazy about testing it because it's a server...download speeds arent important)
