share external drive with samba help

hello all

I have an external 160gig drive (fat32) I would like to share on the network
The problem is that they ony way i can access the share from the XP box is if I'm logged into LInux under that particular account

example: logged into Linux server (where drive is phisically connected) as ME = can see the share in windows can't access it.
log into linux server under wifes ID <--- same as the win XP box, as long as I hot swap the drive so it mounts for my wifes ID I can access the info no prob

so basically the easy fix is to get the USB drive to mount system wide instead of on a per-user basis, although i don't know if thats something easily accomplished

any help would be great

thanks

oh yeah, I've already tried the basics like changing permissions of the drive but they don't stick

also i'm running a standard install of Xubuntu

To have the system mount it rather than HAL (which is doing the per-user mounting) you will want to add the drive to /etc/fstab, which controls which filesystems will be mounted manually.

You would add a line like this:

Code:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/External	vfat auto,user,rw 0 0
You might need to change the device node to reflect your system, and make the mountpoint valid, but that is the general concept. It would mount the device /dev/sda1 to /mnt/External using the FAT32 filesystem. Samba would then be able to access it regardless of the user logged in.

You will need to play with the mountpoint permissions to enable you and your wife to access it too.
