Question setting up static IP - hostname??

hello

I'm running mandrake 9.2 with proftpd ftp server installed along with webmin, no firewall yet.
I set up a temporary static IP and connected my windows PC directly to the linux monster. I was able to connect to the ftp server and upload plenty of files. Now my ISP has sent me my config

static IP 172.17.xxx.xxx
subnet 255.255.240.0
Public IP 192.38.xxx.xxx
gateway 172.17.xxx.xxx
DNS 192.38.xxx.xxx

Using the control center setup was easy, except I left the "hostname" and "zeroconf" fields empty because I'm not sure what they are for.
Now the status of the internet connection is "disconnected" and when i press the connect button nothing happens. The LAN is UP all the time.

What are the "hostname" "zeroconf" fields and what other reasons might cause the internet to be "disconnected" ??

I have a motorola SB4200 cable modem and I use the LAN port, which is connected to a hub where the Linux monster and 2 windows clients are connected.
My ISP can assign unlimited dhcp IP's (works fine with the 2 win) and I just got one static IP for the linux.

I have tryed to connect the linux monster directly to the cable modem without any luck.

well i do not have cable and cannot tell u what the problem is, But my friend has cable and a linux box and he told me if he does not use dhcp the modem does not work. Strange even though he has a static ip the modem does not seam to respond unless it has given out the ip. But this may only be the case with his isp.

Also how are u connected to the cable modem, does the linux box have 2 nics or is everything pluged into a hub.

also can u post what is in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Everything is pluged into the hub. The linux monster only has one network card.

Now I will try to setup the static IP on a windows, to see if that works

ohh /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 says:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=172.17.30.22
NETMASK=255.255.240.0
NETWORK=172.17.16.0
BROADCAST=172.17.31.255
ONBOOT=yes
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no

I have tried to enter the static IP in win2k and it cannot connect to the internet either. I guess my ISP is to blame

well to get things going change static to dhcp and remove the ip
like so. this will get the server a dhcp ipaddy
your isp might want you MAC addy and add it to the dhcp server as a static ip. as this is what i would do.

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
IPADDR=
NETMASK=255.255.240.0
NETWORK=172.17.16.0
BROADCAST=172.17.31.255
ONBOOT=yes
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no
