Setting up little network with slack

Hello fellas, I have put my hand up at work to be the one that whacks together a little network, using linux.

The boxes I intend to use are currently running Win98; the boss fellas like them this way, too. They had reservations about the whole linux proposal until I suggested using zipslack as a base, on the existing FAT32 partition, adding whatever other packages needed and booting from floppy, leaving the precious Win98 build intact.

I've put together a couple of slackware builds before but networking is a gap in my knowledge fortunately this network isn't actually going to do any work, more a demonstration network. The boxes have network cards and I have got the go ahead to buy a cheap little hub. There will be only five computers in this network.

What additional packages will I need to achieve this bare bones network ? I believe Samba is the ticket, will I need to use anything else ? Ipchains ? Any other suggestions, handy hints/tips ?

It depends how wold this network look like. If there's no server, you can use Samba for filesharing (or NFS, but Samba can be accesed from Windows), maybe ftp, ssh, Apache to show power of your installation?

A server would be good to run so we could examine the security side of things. What should I look at from that point of view ?

For small security tests I like Nessus. It's easy to use and points out many things.

Yea a small little network of mixed OS's would be a nice demo, Say a linux box providing samba and NFS/ www/ftp. Keep a windows box up to show how linux can act as a fileserver for windows OS's, create a linux work station that uses the NFS and samba shares. And have fun with the webserver, make a webpage showing how the network is set up.

Show them how you can use ssh to connect to remote linux machines. And if you want to get wild put a full blown work station with X windows and VNCSERVER and show how to use a remote linux desktop from either another linux machine or windows machine.

I helped a guy do this for a demo for a 2 star general, his server was down in florida and I was up here in NJ, we showed the general how we could connect to a Solaris server desktop and run applications from a remote windows computer.

Just some of my thoughts
