Question Setting up authenticated proxy address in Debian

Hi, I'm a linux beginner and I'm trying the box at work (windows domain) on a secondary PC running MEPIS, a Debian clone with KDE.

The network works perfectly and with Firefox (in which I could directly set up proxy address with userid and password) I can browse the internet.

The problem comes when I have to use ANY other application to go over internet. It simply gets blocked by the company proxy.

The setup I made in firefox is manual:

HTTP Proxy: myproxyaddress
Port: 80

When asked for userid and password the first time I entered:

userid: windowsdomainname\myuserid
password: mypassword

I tried to insert in etc/profile the following:

export http_proxy="http://windowsdomanname\myuserid:mypassword@myproxyaddress:80"

but it still doesn't work.

Any clues to help me please?
Thanks in advance!!!!

Exclamation

Hello it's still me, I've found new information from a network administrator who was less reticent than usual

He said that the proxy (on which windows does authenticate) it's running over http (this was already clear) and that it's SQUID:

what I can't understand is that I've been said that windows and firefox under debian work because THEY HAVE THE PROTOCOL TO TALK WITH SQUID, but I cannpt understand why cannot debian talk directly with it.... how can this be? I heard that even these network assistant guys tied an experiment and encountered same problems...

So, considering I don't know how, and, especially, I have no access to reconfigure our squid proxy, how can debian emulate for all applications the authentication protocol by which, instead, firefox succeeds?

Thanks to the holy souls who'll answer me...
