Setting up an ethernet modem with an ADSL connection on debian.
Hello, I'm new to dsl and networking in general. I'm trying to figure out how to set up my Speedstream 5360 (compatible with linux) modem under debian.
My provider gave me the following information.
IP
Subnet Mask
Gateway
Primary and Secondary DNS
I put the dns in /etc/resolve.conf.
I've run the commands
#ifconfig eth0 54.xxx.xxx.xx up netmask 255.255.255.0
#route add default gw 64.xxx.xxx.1
This will occasionally connect me to the internet. If I'm lucky. What I'd like to know is there an easier and more reliable way to do this? Is there any way I can get it to autoconnect? I wasn't given a username and password so it's obviously an adsl connection.
I've read through a lot of messages trying to find someone who has had the same or a similar problem and I can't find anyone. If I'm missing something totally obvious, which is likely, would someone be kind enough to help me out?
Thank you.
