Sendmail help request :)

Hey,

I've managed to get my sendmail running but now I'm facing one stupid problem. If I stop sendmail for 2-3 days and then I start it again I get something like this:

From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <MAILER-DAEMON@*>
Subject: Postmaster notify: see transcript for details
This is a MIME-encapsulated message

--m62EpvVj014224.1215010317/*.com

The original message was received at Wed, 2 Jul 2008 17:51:57 +0300
...more...

like forever. How can I stop this and what makes this happen ? Can I avoid the endless echo in the terminal somehow ?

Thanks in advance

Yes. And they never end. This of course overloads the server.

I'd guess you are not performing recipient validation, and all the bounce messages are for garbage @ yourdomain.com.

Validate recipients; don't use wildcard addresses, which defeat recipient validation.

This smtp server is not visible outside my network ( which is home network ).
How can I validate recipients and why is this needed ?

A bounce message is created after some MTA or submission agent has accepted the mail for delivery. but the attempt at delivery fails. This is different from SMTP-time rejects.

If you have many bounces messages in your queues, you need to examine them to see what they are. It means that either a) you are accepting incoming bounce messages from other servers addressed to your server (backscatter), or your server is creating the bounce messages but is unable to deliver them to their recipients.

Can you characterize these bounce messages you see? Who are the envelope senders and recipients?
