you don't need sendmail itself, but having an smtp server running makes sending mail a very very simple thing to do. you might want to just install ssmtp or esmtp, these are not real mail servers, just send-only relays with minimal configuration. basically you'd use the mail program to connect to them and then they'll just whop the email upstream, without the hassle of using postfix or sendmail (not that they are a hassle as their default configs will do this too)
