Talking send mails with attachment

How can I send mails with Suse Linux 9.1 with attachments. I can only send mails using mail name.gz name@domain.com but no attachment comes. Maybe thats the wrong syntax.

Oh thats maybe the problem I just went to the path using cd xxx/xxx/ etc. and then writing mail ........@xxx.com. But I connected to linux by putty as the mailserver is extern and I cannot install things like mail clients. Maybe there is another way to send mails with the shell?
