satellite telephones as modems?

I wanted to know if linux can use satellite telephones as modems through the serial port. I have a satellite telephone with a datalink (a Motorola 9505 unit) that can connect through the serial port. It has a windows driver that allows it to act as a modem but no drivers for linux. Is it possible to use this phone as a modem in linux?

I am interested in any feedback. I am looking to buy a Thuraya satellite phone and have the same question. I heard though that it was difficult to connect a laptop to a Thuraya phone, but do not know the exact reasons.
