I have installed SUSE Linux 10.1 and would like to activate file sharing with my laptop. I can see my SUSE machine from my laptop running Windows XP Home and I can browse the shares. On the SUSE machine when I click Network Browsing/SMB Shares I get an error that no workgroups can be found and that it could be a result of the firewall. However, in the explorer bar at the top if I type in the IP address of the laptop then its shared directories come up. Any ideas why I cannot browse the workgroup? Thank You
It sounds like there is a problem with the WINS Service, perhaps your SUSE firewall is blocking the wins ports, wins is used for the name-IP resolution in windows sharing workgroups.
That is the same error that I got before when I first started trying to use Samba. If you can ping the wondoze box, then you are likely blocking the ports and windoze can't see you. If you use iptables, try this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p...6.html#3371796 That is where I got mine set up and that is how to set the iptables.
If you are not using iptables, you can still use that to figure out what ports to open.
I appreciate the help but I found an article at TweakHound that walked me through configuring the firewall using the /etc/sysconfig Editor. Everything works great now. Thanks!
