Samba printing success! Cups problems solved.
I just wanted to thank most of you for your informative posts regarding CUPS, SAMBA, and network printing.
Finally, I am now able (after 3 long, hard days) to finally get my laptop running, sadly, Windows XP to print to my HP Officejet v40 running on an old slow computer using Fedora core 5, Cups, and Samba.
What finally did the trick was reading a tutorial on the (the system won't let me post the website, as I am new.) but, if you look for a file called tut.pdf on a linux printing site, you will find it.
and installing the postscript drivers on the Linux machine seemed to fix it, and Windows added them flawlessly.
For those of you still having trouble, here is my smb.conf file, minus the irrelevant stuff. and, if any of you have suggestions, please advise. I personally don't like swat, as it removes the comments.
