The NT domain isn't picking up an NT name, it's picking up the NetBIOS name. The NetBIOS name is associated with the network interface card's Mac address.
Ultimately, all messages are delivered to a Mac address. All other addresses (IP address, etc.) are go-betweens to get a message to a Mac address.
If you name your Linux box with the same name as the NetBIOS name, then the association between the name and the Mac address will be the same whether you boot to Windows or Linux.
