SAMBA networking problem

Hi i have tried to find the solution thru the search function but to no avail.

i need some help in configuring my linux box.
I am running RedHat9.0 on my box. it is current on my network along with 3 windows XP boxes.

this is my problem: i am able to see, create, modify, and move files on teh XP machines thru Linux via the network ( i am assumign it;s SAMBA). how ever i can not do the same thru XP. when ever i go to network neighborhood on XP and double click on the SAMBA server (local host) it gives me an error message.
"\\localhost is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. conatce the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.
you were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. go to system in control panel to change the computer name and try again."

i know i have no duplicate computer names on teh network so what can i do?
please advice.

Two questions and one observation :

1 - observation - localhost is probably not your Linux machine. I expect it's complaining because it's trying to contact your XP machine thinking it's your Linux machine.

1) question - I'm assuming you can ping your Linux box (given that you have networking from it to your xp) but best be sure of this. Can you ping <ip of linux box>?

2) Can you try not using the neighbourhood to connect to it, instead Start --> run --> \\ip.address.of.linux\sharename

and see what it gives you?

3) you did set up samba, smbpasswd and suchlike on the linux box, yes?

Ho hum.. 3 questions - consider the last one a freebie

Slick.

windows xp client not able to browse with samba

I did this step using the ip address of my linux machine (//192.168.0.5/home/dws14) and it doesn't find anything. My server is running and just as the user above, I can see from linux to WindowsXP pro box but not the other way around.

BTW, "localdomain" is the default name of machine after an install with RH 9.

Repost-

Sorry - above I didn't mean "localdomain", but "localhost"...

Anyway, I've tried a multitude of things to logon to the samba server from WindowsXP Pro...
=========================
//192.168.0.5/
//192.168.0.5/shared_folder

//localhost/shared_folder

smb://
smb://localhost/shared_folder
=========================

So because none of the above work (and more), all I see is the name of the samba server "samba server (LOCALHOST)" (I have the default name for my computer) under the computers that belong to the workgroup. If I select it, I get the error that the first user on this post cited above. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could be doing wrong?
