the routing table is going to be empty if you are not getting anythign back from the dhcp server. do you have the dhcdbd client installed? you can check this by running
which may or may not give you an ip address.
please check relevant interface is up/driver loaded
also check there is not a firewall blocking incoming udp requests on ports 67/68
