Router/gateway trouble


I'm gonna try my best here to be informative but not over-informative

Briefing:
Using a typical network, $40 Linksys router (WRT54G) with 4 clients. The only 1 that matters at this point is my desktop so lets get down to what I'm attempting...

I got a Dell Optiplex GX150 SFF from eBay ($40). This might not seem completely logical or efficient, but just go with me on this:

Linksys router will stay in place as it is. currently there is a direct connection from the router to my desktop. I want to place my new CentOS box(Server) in between them and use it as a gateway to create a separate network. Plus will be putting web/database/mail etc etc servers on later.

Here is what I've done:

IP=192.168.1.1 (on 192.168.1.0 network)

eth0=192.168.1.100 (on 192.168.1.0 network)
eth1=192.168.2.1 (on 192.168.2.0 network)
routes:
192.168.2.0  *             255.255.255.0         U  0 0 0 eth1
192.168.1.0  *             255.255.255.0         U  0 0 0 eth0
default      192.168.1.1   0.0.0.0               UG 0 0 0 eth0

Desktop:
eth0=192.168.2.100 (on the 192.168.2.0 network)

I tried to format it best I can!

So here's the deal with all this, from the Client I can ping everything in the 192.168.2.0 network. I can ping the 192.168.1.100 interface but I can't get to 192.168.1.1. This tells me I'm missing something on the Server end. I have iptables disabled (for now), IP Forwarding enabled, and don't understand where the problem is.

Any ideas?

no, you're missing something on the router. you need to tell the linksys box where 192.168.2.0 is. put a static route in it pointing it to 192.168.1.100 and you should be set.

nice formatting btw... wish others would make the effort!

I honestly can't thank you enough! Well if I was rich I'm sure I could!

Thanks so much, I can't say I would have thought of that. I was so locked in to that one directional thought!

I've found that clean, easy to read posts get better response than not so clean posts.

Wow, thanks again! So excited, now I can spend the rest of my morning (3:30AM) compiling Apache and other servers! Hoorah!(military style).

Nah need to get some sleep lol.
