I've read that making Router from old box using Slackware works better then those commercial you get from store,Linksys,D-Link,etc.
What is easier for ,but more safer for file sharing?
I think those from store are easier, but I had bad experinces while filesharing at WinXP.Maybe(sure?) it is XP.But most servers (hubs) don't allowe Linux versions DC.
P2P file sharing is going to be unsafe regardless of what you do..
The P2P clients allow part of your pc to be open for others to play on...
The question may be, which operating system is safer, ie offers better control over visitors, OR which P2P clients do you trust?
You can have a mess with any operating system if it is left open...
With the auditing of *Nix/Mac software, I would personally feel safer using them.
As far as making a Router is concerned, you could trust the ready made products but most are light on features. Build one and you could have whatever you wanted to install...
There are packaged firewalls ready to install, eg Smoothwall, and KNOPPIX variants on cds, just insert and turn on...

Yea P2P is bad.But I need it.I thought making Linux router from some old computer would be better idea then buying some commercial Router from store. And then used one box behind the router for P2P only.
I'll look at those Smoothwalls,etc.
Thank you for your advice.
I appreciate it, just another

I'm sure M$'s security sucks.
I had bad times everytime I go at some of those Czech hubs at DC++.Hacked few times. No Queue, favorites (you know what I'm talking about).
I see you are from Poland,I'm from Czech,in US for bit ,net in Czech still sucks .) slow and expensive.
TSo I'm trying linux.It isn't easy.But I learned a lot.
Anyway I'm sorry but I have one more Q:
Is it possible to run Smoothwall (which erase HDD) together with Linux at the same time?So I can do P2P at one box?Or do I need to build one more box?Already have 2
I would reconmend that you keep them separate. If you are asking one box to be both it would probably put to much a strain on the cpu not to mention resources.
If you have a nice 486 around it will do for Smoothwall ( so says the instructions).
Hope this helps and Good Luck...
