Revamping the server-client configuration in our lab

Hi
We are currently having the following set-up in our lab.
One Master NFS/NIS Server - Solaris, Rest all clients
We are planning to buy a new server and modify the whole set-up. The new server in going to run Red-Hat and it will serve as both the NIS/NFS Server (Master). The existing Solaris system will act as a slave.
I would like to get your suggestions on how to go about doing this and what are the typical issues we need to look at.

Vivek
PS: I am a beginner.

Out of the box, I don't think you will have much problem. RH has a robust NFS/NIS capability and with a little configuration it should easily be inserted into your network. Using the existing Solaris /etc/hosts file and add the RH box into it. Add the hosts in the file to the redhat /etc/hosts file and you should be able to see it on the network. Always remember to restart NFS after making changes. If you want to be able to use the RH box as a file server, and you have windows machines on the network you need to properly configure samba for the network. This can be daunting but with a little reading you should not have many problems.

All servers and clients should be on the same network prefix. Or you could actually split the network up so some clients would still connect to the Solaris box and some would connect to the RH box. ie 192.168.1.xxx, 192.168.2.xxx However if the RH box is going to do dhcp for the network then there are issues you must read and understand, other than that you won't have that big a problem getting it configured properly.

If you have an existing router on the network just point the route on the RH box to it and you should have internet.
