Resolve IP to name in mandrake and redhat

HI everyone...

I need some help..im totally newbie in linux.Im in windows2000 environment which is planning to turn into linux.Im using DHCP and active directory and ofcourse DNS.

The scenario is, I already installed RedHat 9.1 and Mandrake 9.1 in 2 of my PC here.I dont know where to start in linux but i need to installed them for experimentation.

i setup my NIC to get the IP dynamically, because my DHCP server is working fine.

Questions:

1. what command do i use to see all IP configuration.. like in windows 2000 its ipconfig /all. What is the equivalent in linux?

2. i can now ping my ip's in other computer but just using the IP address itself. How can i set my linux to resolve the IP to name without changing the /etc/host because im in DHCP and ip is always changing .

and for last
3. How can i join my linux to win2000 domain?

Thank you very and i hope for your valuable opinions...

1. try 'ifconfig' if that doesn't give you all your interfaces by default try 'ifconfig -a'

2. yes you need to put your DNS server's IP addess into your /etc/reslov.conf (try ' man 5 resolv.conf ') for more info on syntax and options.

3. while there are several facilities to authenticate with a windows domain and use windows resources, it doesn't quite work the way I think you're hoping it will. If you want to centralize the authentication for your linux server you need to setup NIS.

hope that gets you onto the right track...

hi tr4nsfix,

tnx 4 replying...

for my question # 2,yes i have put my DNS server ip address b4 i posted my question here.

Here is my previous setting of /etc/resolv.conf

#apt-domain.loc is my Local domain name

Search path = apt-domain
Name Server 1 = 192..168.1.1
Name Server 1 = 192..168.1.2

My new setting is :

Search path = apt-domain.loc
Name Server 1 = 192..168.1.1
Name Server 1 = 192..168.1.2

what i do is just to put the complete domain name including root domain w/c is .loc.But my problem is everytime i started my computer or execute the command

services network stop
services network start

it always return back to just apt-domain.and it cannot ping again using computer name.

what will i do to maintain the apt-domain.loc search path name?

for my question # 3,im still waiting for some great opinions...thanks
