Remote host said: 550 Relaying Denied

Hi,

I have detailed two problem I have been running into. I wondered if both
the problems might have been related with each other so thought it would
be better to describe the two problems in one thread. I get the below error
message when running the command :

service sendmail restart

Problem # 1 :

Starting sendmail: makemap: error opening type hash map access.db:
Permission denied make: *** [access.db] Error 73

Problem 2 : Relay Denied

I am able to send emails within network using sendmail (guess that's
because the localhost is relay properly), but I am unable to send emails
outside world.

I tried to send an email from yahoo and I got the below error
message

Message from yahoo.com. Unable to deliver message to the following
address(es).

<webadmin@conymn.com>: 66.151.188.253 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 Relaying Denied Giving up on 66.151.188.253.

Note : I am able to telnet successfully to IMAP and POP, but not to
SMTP (says connection refused). But I believe as long as IMAP works
fine, I should be able to receive email.

I am a newbie to Linux and as well to this forum Please help.

Thanks !

Hello Again :

I was able to get rid of the Problem 1 : Starting sendmail: makemap: error opening type hash map access.db: Permission denied

What I did was :

chmod 666 /etc/mail/access.db and now I am able to send emails successfully to the outside world, But my second problem :

Message from yahoo.com. Unable to deliver message to the following
> address(es).

You need to configure a valid domain for your box, and have a MX record in DNS that points to your box' IP. Do you have either a user account, or an entry in /etc/aliases which is "webadmin"? If it's an alias, did you run
Code:
$ newaliases
after editing the file? If you type
Code:
$ dnsdomainname
what does it say?

IMO you should change the perms to

600 for access.db

If you set the perms to 666, any user can add entries to your access.db and the next time your restart sendmail, these unauthorised entries will be used by sendmail.

If 66.151.... is your network, you should add that in access.db to allow sendmail to relay mails from this network.

Finally I got it working yesterday soon after I posted my question in this forum. Guess it's a lucky forum Thanks for all the help. I was able to finally get the email flowing to my mail box. I had the IP Address relayed in access.db and I was able to receive emails.

I'll also set the access.db to 600 though.

Thanks for the help !
