Remote dialin using a ssh and a GPRS modem ?

We have a remote climate monitoring unit running on a minimalist Debian Woody setup in the backblocks of NZ, that I would like to be able to dial into (and thus avoid expensive travel costs). It doesn't have a landline available, but is within cellphone reach, thus the proposed plan is to use a GPRS modem to dial into the system, perhaps with mgetty running at the other end.

Does anyone know if this is feasible, or if there is a better way of achieving the same thing ?

Cheers,

mj

Well, after a bit of reading and experimentation -- it seems that yes this can easily be done with something like Sony Ericsson's GT47.

For the record, all that is needed is to set the APN (see http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html), send *99***1# through a standard chatscript and then let ppp handle the rest of the connection. To disconnect cleanly from the connection (and save having to power on/off the GT47) the unit has to be set to allow switching to command mode via +++AT, and then sending AT+CGATT=0 to disconnect from the GPRS network.

Cheers,

mj
