REL5.5 NIS installation/configuration fails

Dear guys & gals,

I followed the nis tutorial listed below to install a nis server and a single nis client for now:

http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/NIS.html

Everything went well, except when I was setting up the nis server, the following step failed:

# /usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m
-bash: /usr/lib/yp/ypinit: No such file or directory

Everything else was OK on the nis server side.

And for the client, all the steps were performed, except for:

# service ypbind start
Binding to the NIS domain: [ OK ]
Listening for an NIS domain server.................... [FAILED]

Any NIS guru out there that knows what's going on and how to fix this?

Please help; many thanks in advance.

Search your server for ypinit. Maybe it's at /usr/lib64/yp/ypinit instead. Or maybe you need to install the YP server package.

Your client is most likely failing because your NIS server isn't running.

AlucardZero - Thanks so much. You're right; appearantely ypinit has been moved. The file ypinit is now at /usr/lib64/yp/ypinit.

After running ypinit -m on the server, I got the following output:

# /usr/lib64/yp/ypinit -m

At this point, we have to construct a list of the hosts which will run NIS
servers. dns1.ci.glendale.ca.us is in the list of NIS server hosts. Please continue to add
the names for the other hosts, one per line. When you are done with the
list, type a <control D>.
next host to add: dns1.ci.glendale.ca.us
next host to add:
The current list of NIS servers looks like this:

dns1.ci.glendale.ca.us

Is this correct? [y/n: y] y
We need a few minutes to build the databases...
Building /var/yp/ci.glendale.ca.us/ypservers...
Running /var/yp/Makefile...
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/var/yp/ci.glendale.ca.us'
Updating passwd.byname...
Updating passwd.byuid...
Updating group.byname...
Updating group.bygid...
Updating hosts.byname...
Updating hosts.byaddr...
Updating rpc.byname...
Updating rpc.bynumber...
Updating services.byname...
Updating services.byservicename...
Updating netid.byname...
Updating protocols.bynumber...
Updating protocols.byname...
Updating mail.aliases...
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/yp/ci.glendale.ca.us'

dns1.ci.glendale.ca.us has been set up as a NIS master server.

Now you can run ypinit -s FQDN_of_Nis_server on all slave server.
***********************************************************************

But, the slave nis server doesn't have ypinit file at all (I did a find on the system).

Then you probably need to install the YP server package (ypserv).
