If you just want to permanently turn it off:

First use : chkconfig iptables off
Then: service iptables stop

If you want to actually remove it, it might be a little more difficult as there are a bunch of modules that are included with iptables. You can do: rpm -e iptables to remove the rpm itself, but you might have a harder time tracking down the modules.

To get to the terminal:
"start button" -> System tools -> Terminal

That will give you a bash shell.
Then become root by doing:
su -

Linux will then prompt you for the root password
Enter the password.
Then type in the commands.

Type "setup" at the command line and you can turn off the firewall there.
