RedHat and D-link Router

I just installed Red Hat, and I'm using Gnome. The problem is I can't connect to the internet - I've set up a netowrk connection and entered my Address, Subnet, and Gateway - but it either says to check cables (which are hoocked up) or that something else is using the Address or something. I don't know how to even get on the internet without a router so any help would be great.

Cool D-Link DI-614+ With Redhat 9

Freakboy I'm having the same trouble... here's some details.

Have a dlink DFE-530TX ethernet card in my redhat system. My Dlink router is up and running several win2g systems just fine. DHCP is enabled on the router.

I have set the pool to use the following for DHCP assignments: 192.168.199.0 - 253. My router is actually set to use 254. Subnet is 255.255.255.0

On the Redhat box, we are able to get the card active but only by using a static ip. When using DHCP on Redhat, when I try to make eth0 active I get the following message: Cannot activate network device eth0.

Now in addition to this... when this failed activatation attemts... I can see in my DHCP list on the router itself that the router is trying to hand the system the following ip:
192.168.199.102... however... unlike the other systems in this list... the host name is blank.

We are using localhost.localdomain localhost .... Note that in my Hosts tab on Redhat net config, 127.0.0.1 is listed as the above mentioned hostname.

So I dunno,... there is something that we are not configureing to allow this router to talk to us successfully using DHCP.

Also note that when we assign static ip of 192.168.199.102, that we can sucessfully activate eth0.... and ping it.

In addition, when we run ifconfig, I see that packets are being transmitted but nothing is being recieved.

Very interested in anytyhing yall have to say about this. Also note I'm a newbie to Redhat... haven't played with this in years. So when giving advice please speak to me as if I'm an idiot.
