RedHat 9 dhcp configuration problem for intel ethernet card

Hi,
I just installed RedHat 9 on my P4 intel machine. I have also a
Window installed on this machine in one partition and Linux
on another partition.

I have Intel pro 100 ethernet card in the PCI slots of my computer.

When I start the computer, I get the message " Determrmining I P information for eth0 : failed". and eth0 interface is never enabled.

The computer is connected to a cable modem connection from
comcast. And it provides IP address using DHCP. When I boot
the comuter using Windows, I am able to connect to internet
using the same network interface.

Then I try to configure the machine using configure network device optoin on main menu. I set it to DHCP. But when I
activate this interface, it gives me the same error message.

using ifconig, I can see the eth0, lo enteries there. But when
I try ifup eth0 there is the same error message.

I can see the /etc/syconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 entry
in my computer and the entry has DHCP set as well.

I have no idea what else can be missing to configure this interface
to connect to cable modem.

Any pointers on this problem will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to LQ.

Are the physical connections ok? Do you get link lights at each end of the cable?

Thanks David and Dorian,

The cable connections are OK as on Windows I am able to connect to Internet. I am writing this post from Windows .

Comcast is an ISP in my local area. I am a broadband internet
connection subscriber with them. they use DHCP for IP
address allocation.

As I was playing more with the network configurations on
RH 9.. I don't know what I changed even the loopback
interface is having the same problem.

So when I do:

ifup lo

I get the same error message:
" Determrmining IP information for lo : failed"

I don't know what is this. May be it will provide some more
details in which direction I am heading.

Thanks

What do your config files look like - post the output of:
grep "" /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*

That looks ok - what exactly did you change?

Try:
service network restart
dhcclient

Check the Intel site for the e100 Linux driver? It solved problems with my RH9 install in an eyeblink.

Looks like the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* file are ok but scripts failed

try ifconfig to up the interfaces instead ifup (but with this command all settings have to be entered at command line...)

Hi Folks,
By now I have tried RedHat 7.1 / 9, Mandrake 9.. and 3 differnet LAN
cards( Netgear, D-Link and of course one from intel).. But the problem
remains the same.

I can't connect to internet using dhcp.. i even tried the static address
but didn't work..

so i have to come to believe the problem is something else.. the other
factors are my motherboard ( SOYO P4-IS2) and my internet provider
ComCast. I am not sure if things are fine with these two.

I know lot of people have Linux connected to cable modem with ComCast,
but I may not know their exact configuration. The other thing is SOYO
motherboard, I am not sure if this is fully supported for Linux.

I can see the drivers for all these different cards loaded in all the different
Linux Distribution. so I suspect that might not be the problem.

What else is going on, I have no idea.. its been a while since I am trying
to bring internet to my Linux.. all i can say.. its very frustrating experience.
