I cannot seem to get my 2nd network card to function on my Redhat 8.0 system.
Here is my system specs:
Pentium II 300 running Redhat 8.0
Network card 1 (eth0)
Card type: DEC 21*40 and clones (network anywhere or something)
Network card 2 (eth1)
3c509, irq 5
Currently, I only have eth0 enabled and activated, and it functions normally. However, as soon as I activate eth1, neither eth0 nor eth1 will work. I checked /sbin/ifconfig and it shows that both cards are functioning normally.
I suspect it has something to do with the "Lokkit" stuff automatically setting itself up when I enable the second network card. I'd be happy with removing the Redhat Lokkit stuff and setting up my own iptables rules if that is the best option (and if that is the best option, how do you do it?)
I'll be happy to supply more info if anyone could help me with this. Thanks in advance!
Whoops, I didn't supply enough networking information.
eth0 has irq 9 (pnp-pci), and is connected to my cable modem. It uses DHCP to automatically get it's address information. This card works correctly by itself.
eth1 has irq 5 (isa), and is connected to my internal network. It's hard-coded, IP=192.168.0.1, Netmask=255.255.255.0, Default Gateway=192.168.0.1
Basically, I want to use this box as a router to my internal network.
is your cable modem use pppoe? I have DSL at my house with 2 nics on my RH box also. I used to have similar problem like your. Except, my eth1(internet/DSL) with DHCP won't activated at all. But, my eth0(LAN) and pppoe(DSL) connected fine and I could browse the internet. I can't activated my eth1 until I set an internal static IP to it. Now, my eth0, eth1, and pppoe are activated without any problem. Here is my setup:
I have a D-Link router connected to my cable modem and 2 WIN98 systems plugged into CAT-5 ports, setup from WIN98 as a Peer to Peer NW, which works fine.
I have ordered RH 8.0 and hope to connect it as a peer. Is this difficult?
