Question about two services running on an NFS client system
Hello --
One of our systems is running Red Hat Enterprise 7.4, and it serves as a Samba and NFS server to our Windows and Linux systems,
This system, in turn, also is a NFS client to a Solaris system that is exporting via the NFS v4 protocol. The Red Hat system is having difficulty writing to an NFS v4 share that is exported by th SunOS server. As part of the troubleshooting process, I came across the two services listed below:
Quote:
gssproxy.service loaded active running GSSAPI Proxy Daemon
rpc-gssd.service loaded active running RPC security service for NFS client and server
Can these two services be safely turned off without adversely affecting Samba and NFS operations for our client systems?
Distribution: Ubuntu based stuff for the most part

Did you try a Google search to see what they are what they do?
<snarky comment>
with a description like "security service for NFS client and server " seems like it is totally useless for your NFS service that is using the new security of v4 protocol.

I would guess that turning off rpc-gssd.service would adversely affect NFS.
Given that the system is RHEL 7.4, I'd recommend asking Redhat. They can best give you a clear answer as to whether or not these can adverse affect Samba and NFS.
Redhat can also likely aid you with the difficulty writing to the NFS V4 share exported by the SunOS server.
Thank-you for your reply. I do have a ticket open with Red Hat, but the response time has been slow. That was the reason for my posting the question in this forum.

If it's been beyond 2 business days, then it should be escalated. If you happen to have Premium support, then it should be less than 8 hours response time. Plus you can web chat or call their help center.
Other than that, you have my thoughts which is that I feel killing one of those services would be bad.
